St. Paul was born as Saul in the city of Tarsus around the 5th year A.D., in the Roman province of Cilicia (now part of southern Turkey). According to the Acts of the Apostles, Paul of Tarsus was shipwrecked in Malta while in transit from Caesarea Maritima to Rome, sent by Porcius Festus, procurator of Judea, to stand trial before Emperor Nero.
