Cigarettes are made from a paper tube packed with shredded tobacco and a filter or mouthpiece to the base. This smoking method originated in Mexico. It spread to Spain by the 17th century and was introduced in the US in the early 19th century. Before this innovation, people smoked tobacco in pipes and cigar form, or consumed the substance by chewing or in snuff.
